Independent Report
generalAn exquisite hotel in the heart of historic Colchester; Britains oldest recorded town. About 30 years before Columbus discovered America, the Red Lion Colchester opened its doors and it really is a fine example of Tudor England. It is worth visiting just to be able to countless yourself as one of the millions who have passed through its front door over the last 500 years not to mention the endless attractions in Colchester and the immediate surrounding area. (GW 05/2009)
lobbyThe lobby area is Tudor in design with traditional beams.
exteriorBuilt in 1465 the hotel retains its original design of an old Coaching Inn. The exterior has a traditional Tudor frontage (as does the interior) and it is one of the oldest Inns in East Anglia and deserving of it's Grade I listed status.
restaurantThe Parliament Restaurant is set in an old banqueting hall, with plush reds and timbered beams throughout, providing a warm, intimate environment to enjoy freshly prepared and locally sourced cuisine. It is open for breakfast or a mid morning snack and guests can choose from an a la carte or table d'hote menu. There is also a great historic bar full of period features.
roomsThe rooms are medium in size and are kept in good condition along with the Bathrooms. In keeping with the "Tudor feel" within, many of the 24 bedrooms have antique furniture and have retained their original features. Bedrooms have private facilties, radio, colour tv, direct dial telephone and tea and coffee making facilities.
locationThe Red Lion is situated in the centre of Colchester and is less than an hour from London by train and within very easy reach of Stansted Airport.
